COACHING PHILOSOPHY
Going through the minor hockey process already with my oldest son Bryce has been a learning experience for me as a parent as well as a coach. You may feel you can be a good coach simply because you were a good player or because you think you understand the game. There is much more to it than that!! Being a good coach involves the following:
-A good understanding of the game
-Ability to assess the level you are instructing
-Being able to communicate to that age level
-Laying out clear team objectives for parents
-Most importantly – a commitment to each and every player
Coaching at any age involves teaching. I believe that I am a good teacher of the game. Bantam aged players need good teachers. They need someone to break down the game so it becomes easy to understand and they need to be taught the basic skills of hockey.
I believe I understand what skills need to be developed at this age and I have the ability to break down and teach these fundamentals through a variety of drills and demonstrations. My biggest asset would be my ability to interact with all age groups.
As you can see from my resume, I have been involved at all levels of hockey including Junior and have enjoyed the challenges that each level brings.
One thing I strongly believe in at any age is “respect”. Respect for the game, respect for your elders, respect for officials and respect for one another as players is very important and will be strongly promoted on any team of mine.
Our goal is to help young players be better hockey players, but we all know as parents that many life lessons are learned through sports.
Hopefully I can provide a positive environment for learning and along the way these players will have a better understanding about “respect” and the importance it has in society.
Sincerely,
Bill Cumming
